Rare painting to return to Netherlands after centuries in England

British government grants export licence for work by Jean-√Čtienne Liotard, bought by Amsterdam’s Rijksmuseum for £4.4m

A picture of a tranquil young Dutchwoman pouring her morning cup of coffee is returning to the Netherlands for the first time since it was painted in the country in 1756.

A Dutch Girl at Breakfast, by the 18th-century Swiss artist Jean-√Čtienne Liotard, has been acquired by the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam after spending centuries in an English collection.
